Centuries by Jesse Ryder and Daniel Vettori took the hosts to a respectable score after tottering at 61 for six at lunch.
New Zealand are 279 all out
Jesse Ryder hung around just long enough to bring up his maiden Test hundred before succumbing to Ishant Sharma as New Zealand folded up for 279.
Top Performer: Jesse Ryder
Iain O'Brien jumped down the track to Harbhajan Singh and was promptly stumped by MS Dhoni, who whipped the bails off in a flash.
Munaf Patel struck twice in an over, removing Daniel Vettori and Kyle Mills in successive deliveries to put New Zealand back in trouble.
Munaf finally got rid of Daniel Vettori, who nicked one to MS Dhoni behind the stumps after a great century.
Vettori cracked a sensational century to bail New Zealand out of choppy waters against India in the first Test.
Tea, New Zealand are 162 for six
New Zealand dominated the second session of the first day of the first Test against India, thanks to fifties by Daniel Vettori and Jesse Ryder.
A fluent fifty by New Zealand skipper Vettori has helped the hosts resurrect their innings against India in Hamilton.\
Meanwhile, Jesse Ryder brought up his fourth consecutive Test fifty right at the stroke of tea.
Ryder and Vettori dropped anchor against a rampaging India on track that seems to have eased out after lunch.
Lunch, New Zealand are 61 for six
New Zealand suffered a terrible collapse at the start of the first Test at Seddon Park in Hamilton after being held to 61 for six by India at lunch.
After winning the toss, India opted to bowl first and seemers Ishant Sharma, Zaheer Khan and Munaf Patel set about orchestrating one of their country's best opening sessions in Test history.
They gave New Zealand's openers the first hour before the wickets began to fall, as Martin Guptill, Daniel Flynn and Tim McIntosh were picked off in quick succession by Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma.
Test debutant Guptill was the first to go when he edged Kahn to Rahul Dravid in the slips after reaching 14, leaving the total on 17 for one.
His replacement, Flynn, lasted just three balls before he too fell foul to Kahn, caught behind by MS Dhoni off a leg-side delivery for no runs.
Despite the good start India could have done even better as they missed chances to take more wickets, dropping Ross Taylor in the gully off just his second ball and missing a run out opportunity against McIntosh.
But the fall soon continued with Sharma picking off McIntosh for the first of his three wickets so far. McIntosh went for 12 after being caught by Virender Sehwag at gully.
Taylor and James Franklin followed soon after, also taken by Ishant, before Munaf joined the party by getting Brendon McCullum to nick one to VVS Laxman at the slip cordon.
